Ministry of Defence
By migrating from 19 legacy systems to a single virtual private network (VPN), the MOD was able to realise immediate savings of £400m on the set-up alone. Increased network efficiencies and the ability to redeploy staff to more important activities produced annual cost reductions of up to £40m.

The MOD worked in partnership with BT, through the UK's Public Finance Initiative, to achieve the desired results. As part of the deal, BT was selected to develop and implement the VPN as well as manage the system for 10 years. This allows the MOD to outsource the risk and guarantee performance of network management.
