BT Fusion: the world’s first combined fixed and mobile phone

BT has launched the world's first combined fixed and mobile phone service – BT Fusion.

BT Fusion is a significant milestone in the development of converged fixed-mobile communications services. Aimed initially at the UK market, BT Fusion works like a mobile phone when you’re on the move, but switches automatically to a BT Broadband connection when you get back to your home or office. As a result, you get the convenience and features of a mobile handset but with fixed line prices and quality.

The service will transform the communications landscape and bring excellent value to customers,” said Ian Livingstone, CEO of BT Retail. “We know that many of our customers enjoy the convenience of their mobile phones when they're out and about - but switch to using a landline phone when they arrive back home to save money or because they have little or no mobile coverage. For the first time customers will be able to get the best of both worlds in one service – combining the convenience and features of a mobile with fixed line prices and quality.

The new service combines a feature-rich BT Fusion handset, based on the Motorola V560, with a wireless BT Home Hub that uses Bluetooth technology to connect calls from the handset to a user’s BT Broadband line - even in mid-call. The hub can also be used to create wireless networks connecting PCs, printers and other devices, and supports up to six BT Fusion handsets.

The handset, which was specifically designed for BT Fusion, works just like a mobile phone when you’re on the move. It includes quad-band support, an integrated camera with photo caller ID, hands-free speakerphone, and other state-of-the-art mobile handset features.

The launch of BT Fusion will start with approximately 400 early adopter customers, with the service being widely available for delivery in the UK in September.

"BT is taking a world lead in pushing forward fixed-mobile convergence and BT Fusion will form a significant part of our growth plans," Ian Livingstone concluded.
