BT begins migration of global voice services to IP

BT has announced a £12m investment programme to migrate its global voice platform onto an IP-based network. The programme will see BT’s legacy TDM network replaced by an MPLS platform in many countries around the world.

The new network will enable BT to handle larger volumes of traffic and improve service for customers with additional functionality and enhanced features – from easier integration with existing servers, to the ability to deploy more integrated multimedia services such as audio/video conferencing and video streaming.

Aaron McCormack, BT’s vice-president of IP Networking, said: “This investment once again highlights our long-term commitment to provide a high-quality service for our customers. Through increased scalability and access to the global MPLS capacity, this programme will enable us to provide a superior service to our customers. On this IP network, customers will be provided with next generation services at better value.”

The first phase of the programme has already been successfully delivered, offering services over the new platform in twelve countries to more than xxx customers. The new platform will be rolled out to three new countries per quarter as the programme continues. BT’s legacy TDM platform will be withdrawn in 2008.
