A Scaleable Network
BT ensures that all of its customers' future requirements are met. The scalability of the BT Internet Access network has been architectured by using a number of key components:-

Cisco Routers
Leading Edge Cisco Gigabit Switching Routers (GSRs) have been deployed globally into core network providing a n*2.5Gbit/s backbone network. The core GSRs consists are 12000 series that meet the exponential growth in demand for Internet bandwidth and brings scalability and high-performance to the BT Internet Access network. The GSRs are capable of supporting access speeds of upto GigE and STM-16 giving customers a highly scaleable network.

Pan European Network
The BT Internet network is built on BT's high speed Pan European Network (PEN). The core network is based on Synchronised Digital Hierarchy (SDH), incorporating 75,000km of fibre, that is highly suitable for IP and enables BT to operate an n*2.5Gbps IP Backbone network.

Resilience
BT Internet Access gives a fully resilient and redundant network and maintains high availability and quality. Resiliency in the BT Internet Access can be found within the Node and Network design. The resilience within the node design incorporates routers that are fully equipped with dual power supplies and spares of all equipment are held at each node location for minimum down time. At the same time network resiliency is achieved with the provision of n x STM-16 transatlantic circuits that are based on different cabling systems and n x STM-16 and STM-4 core circuits.

Autonomous Systems Design
BT Internet Access is architectured to provide high-speed connectivity. This is achieved by creating 3 Autonomous Systems (AS) to help minimise the number of hops which in turn enables internet traffic to travel through the network quickly and give a business class performance.

Customers will interconnect directly with BT 's AS5400 in Europe which neighbour multiple European and US networks to provide high quality connectivity within Europe and to the United States and the Asia-Pacific Region.

Peering Arrangements
BT has established a substantial amount of private and public peering arrangements throughout the world providing customers with high quality local, regional and global connectivity to Internet sites. With the increasing amount of peering arrangements within Europe and the US BT Internet Access gives a first class business performance.

Coupling BT 's existing global backbone with these extensive peering arrangements provides customers with a high-speed network ensuring high responsive delivery times to all internet destinations around the world.

BT offers a variety of products and services that can provide bundled tailor-made solutions to meet customer's requirements. In addition to BT Internet Access the following complementary products are offered within the IP Product Portfolio:

  • BT IP Sec enabling customers to build IP Virtual Private Networks.
  • BT International Remote Internet Access enabling customers to BT Internet Access remotely.
